Let Me Tell You About Sofia

In recent weeks, the Trump Administration created a situation no family should ever have to face.

They attempted to revoke the immigration status of 4-year-old Sofia and her family—a decision that would have forced her to leave the country and lose access to the life-saving medical care she needs. The consequences could have been fatal.

But after public outcry and pressure from advocates, leaders, and countless concerned Americans who refused to look away, Sofia and her family have been granted the ability to stay.

While this is a relief, it is also a reminder of the harm this Administration is causing families across the country.

As the father of two young children, I found Sofia’s story heartbreaking—not just because of what almost happened to her, but because it reflects Trump's vision of America—one where compassion is cast aside and vulnerable families are treated as political targets.

Taking away someone’s immigration status doesn’t just hurt individuals—it tears at the fabric of our communities. These are our classmates, caretakers, friends, and neighbors. People who contribute, who belong, and who deserve better.

We should never have had to fight to keep a 4-year-old child from being deported away from medical care. But we did—and we’ll keep fighting.
